저희 연구실에서는 열 및 에너지 분야에 대한 열정과 호기심이 가득한 대학원생을 모집하고 있습니다.
연구분야 및 내용에 대한 설명은 홈페이지의 연구내용 소개 및 출판된 논문들을 참조하시기 바라고, 궁금한 점이 있으면 언제든지 연구책임자나 대학원생들에게 문의하시기 바랍니다.
연구실에 지원을 고려하는 학생들은 다음과 같은 사항을 참조하시기 바랍니다.
(1) 기계공학과에 소속되어 있는 연구실이지만, 연구 주제 및 내용은 다학제적인 지식을 필요로 합니다. 따라서, 기계공학에서 다루는 열 및 에너지 뿐만 아니라, 현대물리학, 고체물리, 재료열역학, 무기화학, 센서 및 측정시스템 등에 배경지식이 있는 학생은 아무래도 조금 더 수월하게 연구를 시작할 수 있을 것입니다. 설령 해당분야 배경지식이 없더라도 대학원에 진학해서 여러 학과에서 개설되는 수업을 통해 습득할 기회가 충분하니 너무 염려하지 않아도 됩니다. 중요한 것은 그동안 배워온 것과 다른 분야의 지식을 열린 마음으로 받아들이고, 그 과정을 즐길 준비가 되어 있는가 입니다.
(2) 기본적으로 실험을 위주로 연구를 진행하는 연구실입니다. 본인이 수많은 시행착오를 겪으면서 직접 소재나 디바이스를 제작하고, 제작한 소재나 디바이스의 특성 및 성능을 측정하고, 얻어진 데이터를 분석하는 등의 과정을 통해 연구를 진행하는 데에 흥미와 적성이 있을지 생각해 보시기 바랍니다. 참고로 저희 연구실의 모토는 "Just Do It" 입니다. 실패할지언정, 시도해보지 않으면 아무것도 얻을 수 없기 때문입니다. 실험을 하다보면 느끼게 되겠지만, 수많은 실패를 통해 얻는 경험이 훗날 좋은 연구를 할 수 있는 자양분이 되는 것은 틀림없습니다.
(3) 연구실 지원을 고려하는 학생은 반드시 사전에 교수님께 이메일을 통해 연락을 하시기 바랍니다. 연락 할 때는 학생에 대한 간략한 소개와 함께 연구실에 지원하고자 하는 이유, 그리고 참고가 되는 서류 및 증명 등을 함께 보내주면 판단에 도움이 됩니다.
(4) 지원 전에 포스텍 학생들과 외부 학생들 모두 최소 1회 방학 기간 혹은 학기 중에 연구참여를 해야만 지원자로 고려가 됩니다. 길게는 5-6년 이상 걸릴 수도 있는 대학원 생활을 보내게 될 연구실이 어떤 곳인지 지원 전에 알아보기 위한 노력을 기울이는 것은 어찌보면 당연하다 할 수 있습니다. 또한, 연구참여는 본인의 적성 및 연구실과의 궁합에 대해 파악할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 됩니다.
(5) 서류전형 합격 후 면접일 1 주일 전까지 본인이 관심있는 연구주제에 대한 10페이지 이내(double spaced)의 국문 혹은 영문 review article을 word 파일로 제출하시길 바랍니다. 형식은 자유이나, 기존 journal들에 실린 review article들의 형식을 참조하면 도움이 될 것입니다. 참조 논문(references)은 최소 10편 이상 기재할 것이 요구됩니다. 아직 특정 관심분야를 정하지 못한 학생은 대안으로서, 연구실 홈페이지에 기재된 주요 연구분야 중 2 ~ 3개 분야에 대한 내용을 정리한 국문 혹은 영문 article을 마찬가지로 10페이지 이내(double spaced)의 word 파일로 작성해서 제출하여도 됩니다. 형식은 연구동향, 특정 연구 분야 내 세부 주제에 대한 내용 등 자유롭게 작성하되, 참조 논문은 최소 10편 이상 기재가 요구됩니다. 본 article을 제출하지 않는 학생은 면접 시 고려대상에서 제외됩니다. 면접 시 제출한 article 내용을 바탕으로 질의응답이 이루어질 수 있습니다.
(6) 연구자의 중요한 자질 중 하나는, 논리적인 글을 읽고 쓰는 능력입니다. 오늘날 학계에서는 영어를 공용어로 이러한 소통이 이루어지고 있습니다. 따라서, 논리적인 글쓰기 능력 혹은 영어 작문 실력을 증명할 수 있는 학생(제출한 article도 평가에 고려)은 지원 시 가산점을 부여할 계획입니다.
(7) 개인적으로 좋은 연구자가 되기 위해 가장 필요하다고 생각하는 덕목은, 본인의 연구 분야에 대한 호기심, 열정, 그리고 실패를 견뎌내는 끈기(인내심)입니다. 세 가지 중 한가지만 결여되더라도 긴 대학원 생활이 매우 힘들게 느껴질 수도 있습니다. 적지 않은 시간을 투자해야 하는 대학원 진학에 앞서, 연구를 업으로 삼고 살아가는 이 길이 본인과 잘 맞는 길일지 다시한번 심사숙고 하는 것도 도움이 될 것 입니다.
마지막으로, 대학원 생활 그리고 더 멀게는 연구자로서의 길이 생각보다 그리 호락호락한 길이 아닐 수 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 저희 연구실 팀의 일원으로 진정 열 및 에너지 분야의 발전에 기여하는 연구를 하고 싶고, 해당 분야에 전문지식을 가진 연구자로 성장하고 싶은 꿈이 있다면 도전하시길 바랍니다. 저희 연구실은 해당 분야에서 세계적인 연구실로 발돋움 하고자 하는 꿈이 있습니다. 그 꿈에 동참하고자 하는 여러분의 도전을 환영합니다.
Our lab is recruiting graduate students who are self-motivated and have passion in thermal and energy research fields. For detailed description of our research areas, please refer to the research section and published articles on the website. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the principal investigator or graduate students.
Please read the following notes if you are considering to apply to TELab.
(1) Although TELab belongs to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, our research requires multidisciplinary knowledge from different fields of study. Therefore, assuming that you are familiar with heat and energy concepts covered in mechanical engineering, having some pre-acquired knowledge on modern physics, solid-state physics, materials thermodynamics, inorganic chemistry, sensors and measurement systems could help you to start your research with relative ease in the beginning. Even if you have not had exposure to those subjects yet, there are many opportunities to learn them from classes in different departments once you enter the graduate school. More importantly, what matters is whether you are open-minded and ready to enjoy learning from different fields of study.
(2) TELab primarily focus on experimental research. You may undergo many trials and errors while making materials or devices, measuring the characteristics or performance of the materials, and analyzing the data acquired from the experiments. It would be helpful to think about yourself and figure out whether you are the type of person who can really enjoy this kind of hands-on research. For your information, the motto of our lab is Just Do It. You never learn if you do not try. You will realize someday that those memories of failures are the most valuable experiences.
(3) Both POSTECH and external students are required to participate in research program in our lab at least once for a certain period of time (e.g. during a vacation period or semester) before the application. Completing graduate study could take five to six years or more, so it is important to make an effort to figure out if you like us. Participating in our research program also gives us an opportunity to learn about you.
(4) After passing the first screening, please turn in a short English review article (less than 10 pages, double spaced in Word) of the subject of your interest by one week before the interview date. You can refer to the format of existing articles published in different journals. A minimum of 10 references need to be listed. If you could not find a particular area of interest yet, you can instead submit a summary article on two or three of our research areas listed on the lab homepage (English article, less than 10 pages, double spaced in Word). You can choose to write either about research trends in your choice of area, or about a research topic in those areas. At least 10 reference papers are required. During the interview, questions about the submitted article may be asked. Students who do not submit the article will be excluded from consideration.
(5) One of the important qualities for a good researcher is the ability to read and write logical sentences. Today, the academic community uses English as an official language. Thus, students who can show their logical writing skills or English composition skills (submitted articles will also be considered) will be given some advantages in application.
(6) Curiosity, passion for one’s research field, and persistence are considered the most desirable qualities for a good researcher. If any of these qualities lacks, graduate school life could feel painful. Therefore, it would be helpful to contemplate if this road is what you really want before you enter a graduate school.
As a final remark, life as a graduate student and, even further, the path to becoming a ‘good’ researcher could be quite tough than expected. Nevertheless, if you are eager to do research that can make significant contributions to thermal and energy fields and have a dream to grow into a good researcher in TELab, we encourage you to challenge your dream.
