Sustainable Fuel Synthesis

Beyond clean hydrogen production, our research group investigates the use of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a carbon resource to produce sustainable fuels for aviation, shipping, and other applications, with the aim of reducing reliance on fossil resources and lowering carbon emissions. Through catalyst design, control of reaction conditions such as temperature and pressure, and the use of additional energy inputs, we aim to develop materials and processes that improve the efficiency of CO2 conversion and fuel synthesis. Recently, integrated processes have been demonstrated for synthesizing liquid fuels, including kerosene, from CO2 using solar thermal energy or renewable electricity. Studies have also reported methanol production from CO2 and hydrogen by combining plasma with catalysts. These developments reflect growing global interest in converting CO2 into useful fuels as an approach to reducing carbon emissions while meeting fuel demand.

Green Hydrogen & Syngas Production

Our research group aims to economically synthesize carbon-neutral fuels (target cost: below $2/gallon) by utilizing abundant terrestrial thermal energy and surplus renewable electricity. To achieve this vision, our initial goal is to develop technologies capable of efficiently producing synthesis gas (H2+CO), a precursor for carbon-neutral fuels. We focus particularly on thermochemical hydrogen production cycles based on volumetric reactions, suitable for large-scale hydrogen production. Thermochemical hydrogen production cycles act as chemical heat engines, producing hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO) without emitting carbon dioxide through a two-step reaction cycle performed consecutively at high and low temperatures. In the first step, metal oxides release oxygen and undergo reduction under high temperatures and low oxygen partial pressures. In the second step, the oxygen-deficient metal oxides thermodynamically seek to reabsorb oxygen, splitting chemical bonds in water vapor (H2O) or carbon dioxide (CO2), thereby generating hydrogen and carbon monoxide. To this end, we are working to improve the thermodynamic properties and reaction kinetics of metal oxides and investigating reaction pathways that utilize various energy sources such as microwaves and plasma.

Methane-to-Hydrogen and Value-Added Products

Currently, more than 90% of global hydrogen production relies on steam methane reforming and gasification processes, both of which emit carbon dioxide (CO₂). Green hydrogen, produced by splitting water with renewable energy, is the ideal solution, but its commercialization is expected to take time due to limited technological maturity and high production costs. Against this backdrop, turquoise hydrogen, produced by the direct thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) of methane without CO₂ emissions, is gaining attention as a promising alternative that can meet hydrogen demand until green hydrogen technologies reach sufficient maturity. Metal catalysts used in methane pyrolysis offer high methane conversion, and the high-quality carbon generated as a by-product can be sold to lower the cost of hydrogen production. However, carbon deposition on the catalyst surface during the process leads to a loss of catalytic activity. With research support from POSCO, our team aims to overcome this issue through catalyst and process development and to improve the production efficiency of turquoise hydrogen. In addition, we are conducting research on the selective production of hydrogen (H₂) and carbon monoxide (CO) via the partial oxidation of methane. Through this work, we seek to develop technologies that convert methane into hydrogen and valuable chemical feedstocks, contributing to sustainable energy utilization.
